Material Exploration

Developed during a 4-hour design challenge for Yabu Pushelberg, this material exploration concept responded to the prompt of creating new bespoke materials for future hospitality projects. Inspired by hand-crafted and hand-painted artistry, I experimented with contrasts—light and dark, smooth and thick textures, and the transformation of soft forms into hard surfaces like ceramic tiles. Selected from 120 entries, this concept was further developed by Moss and Lam and featured in *Metropolis Magazine*'s December 2016 issue, 'Materials Palette.'

From a concept.

To a material.

Exploration 1

Painted to explore expressive brush strokes, utilizing bleeding and streaking techniques that produce undulated grey tones.

Exploration 2

Reminiscent of watercolour, utilizing adjacent layering to break up the texture.

Exploration 3

Painted technique expressing smooth and smeared textures, keeping the background light and utilizing black as accents.
